The area guide

Find your corner of Charleston

From the historic peninsula to salt marshes and ocean islands, get to know the Lowcountry.

The historic peninsula

Rainbow Row, the Battery, the French Quarter, and King Street fit into walkable clusters. Uneven sidewalks and summer humidity can make short distances feel longer. Choose comfortable shoes and plan shade breaks.

Across the Cooper River

Mount Pleasant is home to Shem Creek, Patriots Point, and waterfront views. Allow time for bridge traffic and cluster stops on the same side of the harbor to avoid unnecessary drives.

The barrier islands

Folly Beach lies south of downtown. Sullivan’s Island and Isle of Palms sit east of Mount Pleasant. Each has its own parking and beach rules. Pick one island for a beach day rather than trying to visit them all.
